Great first meeting, guys! I think it will be a great year.

Our second book of the year is a 100 page picture book. We Are the Ship: The Story of Negro League Baseball, by Kadir Nelson. The illustrations in this book are inCREDible! I think you will find it to be informative to read and beautiful to look at. We’ve read this before in Guys Read.

Since the last Thursday of November is Thanksgiving, we’ll be meeting on the first Thursday of December. Mark your calendar!

Meeting: Thursday, December 3, 6:30-7:30 pm, in the library

October Book Post – Duke

17265217UPDATE! We’ll be Skyping with author Kirby Larson at our Oct. 29 meeting! Huzzah! Hope you can make it!

Here we go again, guys! We are off and running on another year of TMC Guys Read. This club never gets old. It will be a good year.

Our first book is Duke, by Kirby Larson. This is a great, great World War II historical fiction book, set in Seattle. Kirby lives in Washington, and is a real friend of readers everywhere. She is a historical fiction master. I think you’ll love Duke.

We will meet at the end of October to talk books, eat treats, and have fun! Can’t wait!

Meeting: Thursday, October 29, 6:30-7:30 pm, in the library

PS – If you loved Duke, you should read Kirby’s companion book, Dash. It is another Seattle World War II dog and kid story, but from a whole different side of the war impact.

April Book Post – The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Welcome back to TMC Guys Read Cohen Reads. You can thank your pal Cohen for keeping your monthly club going.

You can thank you pal Cohen for this month’s book, too. April is guys’ choice month, which basically meant Cohen’s choice, since he was the only one at the last meeting. And he’s picked a good one.

Our April book is The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick. We’ve read this several times before in Guys Read. It’s definitely a favorite.

It really was Cohen who saved your club. I was ready to stop the monthly meetings since attendance has been so poor, but he insisted that we keep on. Don’t let him (and me) down! I hope you will rejoin us for the last two months. I have a grand finale planned for May, so you’ll want to be in the know!

Meeting: Thursday, April 30, 6:30-7:30 pm, in the library

January Book Post – Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH

nimhA little late getting this out, but here it is!

Our next book is Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, by Robert C. O’Brien. This is a classic. I haven’t read it for a long time, so I’m excited to reread with the book club.

I hope you can make it to book club this time. Cohen and I had to eat all the treats ourselves last time. Which is delicious, but not quite as fun.

This book was made into a movie a while ago. I like the movie, but they also changed a lot of things from the book. Here is the trailer:

See you soon! Keep reading!

Meeting: Thursday, January 29, 6:30-7:30 pm, in the staff lounge

TMC IBRG – G-I-Spin Many Colors

Sometimes I am quick to get videos posted, and sometimes I am not. Here is last Friday’s work.

In our continued science-y video series, inspired by Jon Scieszka’s Frank Einstein, we worked for the last couple meetings on color wheels. These are supposed to spin and mix the colors. The reason for the mixing is that the wheel is spinning faster than our eyeballs and brain can process what it is seeing. I’m wondering if Franks robots have advanced optical sensors, and if this experiment would be lost on them…

Here you go!

OK, SMS Guys Read. What are you up to next?

November/December Book Post – How They Croaked

Well, here we go, boys! Our last meeting was fun. A little rowdy, but…still fun. Hopefully next time we can do a little more talking and a little less…bouncing?

In any case, our next book is How They Croaked: The Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous, by Georgia Bragg. This is probably the grossest book I’ve ever read. And it’s all true! We have read this book before. It’s kind of like a collection of mini-biographies. In this case, the mini-biography of each person is just the story of their death. Pretty wild! Some of them are crazy, some of them are nasty, and all of them are interesting!

See you the Thursday after Thanksgiving! Keep reading!

Meeting: Thursday, December 4, 6:30-7:30 pm

October Book Post – Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

joeyOK, here we go! Time to get this thing rolling!

Our first Guys Read book of the year is Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, by Jack Gantos. This is a book we’ve read before. More than once. More than twice! It’s that good.

I hope you can join us for our first night of fun and food and books and fun.

Also, starting very shortly, the return of the Intercontinental Ballistic Reading Group, with out friends at SMS Guys Read, in North Carolina.

See you soon. Keep reading!
