May Book Post – The Fear Place

Here we go! Our last book of the year. Tyler, Brendan, and the rest of us have had a great time. Maybe next year we’ll have a few more members.

Our final book is The Fear Place by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. She is a Newbery Medal-winning author, for Shiloh. This was the favorite book from last year’s group.

Have fun reading!

April Book Post – Maniac Magee

Well, we weathered our first one-guy meeting last month. Luckily, Brendan always has lots to say.

Our next book is another Newbery Medal winner, this time by much-loved author Jerry Spinelli. It’s Maniac Magee. I haven’t read this story since elementary school, so it will be like I’m reading it for the first time!

This is our penultimate book, and I hope we’ll have a good group of guys for our last two meetings.

Keep on readin’ on!

March Book Post – Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World

Wow! We had a big breakthrough with Sasquatch. Tyler and Brendan both posted comments to the blog discussion! Exciting! Check out their thoughts in the Sasquatch post.

Our next book is our first and only foray into nonfiction this Guys Read year. Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, by Jennifer Armstrong, is the true story of Ernest Shackleton and the crew of the Endurance. The ship was caught and crushed in the Antarctic ice, a thousand miles from help. And everyone survived. Quite an extraordinary story.

We’re hoping to have some new members for this next meeting. We’ll see. Keep reading!

February Book Post – Sasquatch

We are rolling right along. Our fourth book of the year is Sasquatch by Roland Smith. This book sort of blurs the line between realistic fiction and fantasy. I guess it depends on whether or not you believe Sasquatch exists!

Our members have an assignment this month: To recruit another member. Three’s a crowd, but we want a horde! We could really use a fifth grader or two. It’s Guys Read, not just Fourth Grade Guys Read!

And I’ll keep writing these posts, if you promise to keep not writing on them. Wait! I want you to write on them! What’s your excuse?

Decemeber/January Book Post – Al Capone Does My Shirts

Hello everyone! We had another successful meeting last night. I’m already excited for the next one!

Our next book is Al Capone Does My Shirts, by Gennifer Choldenko. Like Hatchet, it is a Newbery Honor book. It is also our first historical fiction story.

Who will be the first guy to write on the blog? Brendan’s dad wrote on it for our first book, but none of our kid guys yet! Being first is exciting!

This book is a little longer than our previous selections. You have the rest of December and most of January to read it, but start sooner rather than later. And don’t forget to take it home over Winter Break!

See you soon! Keep reading!

November Book Post – Hatchet

Sorry to be so late getting this post up. I’ve been busy, but not that busy. Just hadn’t done it.

Our Guys Read book for November is Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. This Newbery Honor book is perhaps the most “guy” book of all time. A great one for really digging into guy reading.

Last month was a great start, with our three guys and three parents (and three staff members). Hopefully this month will be even better, with another guy or two. Plus, Mr. H., our P.E. teacher, has said that he wants to come, too. Hooray for guys!

Remember to read the blog rules before commenting. Happy reading and happy blogging! See you in a couple weeks!

October Book Post – Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

Hey howdy hey! Time to get this thing rolling! We won’t meet until the last week of October, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be reading, and blogging.

Our first book this year is Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, by Jack Gantos. We read this last year and everyone seemed to like it, so this time we’re batting it lead-off. The book was a National Book Award Finalist, and its sequel, Joey Pigza Loses Control, was a Newbery Honor Book.

Before you use this blog, be sure to read the rules at right very carefully. The Internet has many wonderful potentials, and a few scary ones. I assure you that there is no danger of posting on our Guys Read blog, as long as we follow the rules. However, for this reason, I will delete any comment that does not follow the rules. So read them carefully, and have fun! To leave a comment, click on “Comments” below.

I’m excited to get started! Guys read! And we love it!
