October Book Post – Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key

Hey-o! I’m really excited for Guys Read this year! Last year we had only fourth graders (except Jetson came once, I think), so this year we should have some great leaders to complement some great new members.

Our first book is Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key, by Jack Gantos. It is a wild book about a great kid with one big problem. I think you’ll definitely enjoy it.

Actually, I know you will, because we’ve read this book before. In fact, this was the second book ever for TMC Guys Read, several years ago.

See you soon, and keep up the reading!

  1. Great first meeting, guys! It was excellent to welcome back Camden and Will, our wily veterans. They’ll definitely bring some Guys Read experience. And we were joined by two newcomers, Dakota and Nick. We’re glad to have you!

Our discussion was spirited and strong; I think we could have easily talked for another twenty minutes and not even noticed. Joey Pigza certainly gives folks a lot to talk about.

We also enjoyed some real shoofly pie. It’s got a different flavor than what some of us are used, thanks to all that molasses. But it was tasty. Or as Will said, “Delectable.”

I also looked up that YouTube “Fred” show that the guys were talking about. Here’s the website. He was a little like Joey, but I think Fred is a lot crazier and has a much more annoying voice. So annoying, in fact, that I don’t think I’ll be going back to the “Fred channel” anytime soon. But you can, if you want. There were some funny parts, and it definitely was non-stop jabbering.

Can’t wait until the next meeting! Who will be the first guy to blog-comment this year?

  2. It was a good book. Pretty silly and funny.

  3. I’m glad you liked it, John. You’re right, it is both silly and funny. But you also feel a little sad for Joey, since he can’t seem to help it.

Too bad you couldn’t make it to the meeting. We would have loved to have you there. Thanks for writing on the blog! You’re the first one!

  4. So far, I’m loving Joey Pigza. Sorry I couldn’t make the first meeting. I’ll be there next time.

  5. I’m glad you’re liking it, Michael! At the meeting, we talked a little about the sequels, Joey Pigza Loses Control and What Would Joey Do? Do you think you like the book enough to read even more about Joey?

Looking forward to having you there this month!
